Former Tottenham and England winger Andros Townsend has urged Manchester United to complete the signing of Raphael Varane after they announced a deal for Jadon Sancho.
The Old Trafford club announced a £72.9million deal for England winger Sancho on Thursday as their first deal of the window, following a long chase that has dominated the headlines in the last two summers
That leaves United keen to move on to their next priority of central defence, with Real Madrid centre-back Varane seen as the ideal player to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence.
United are pursuing a deal for the Frenchman and are making progress on a potential transfer despite distance between the two clubs’ valuation of the player.
Townsend, who currently plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League, thinks that Varane is a signing that could take United to the next level.
Speaking to talkSPORT, the 29-year-old said; “‘If you look at Manchester United’s team, they are very top-heavy.
“They have a lot of forward options and Jadon Sancho will give them another option but Varane, if he does come in, will solidify the back four.
“He will give them extra strength, extra pace and somebody of his calibre is more suited to the Premier League.
“He’s big, he’s strong, he is quick and I definitely think the Varane one takes them closer to where they want to be.”
Varane has won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies and is keen on a new challenge after spending a decade at Real Madrid. He has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout his career after turning them down to move to the Bernabeu in 2011
