Chelsea Chief Sends Message To Transfer Target After Injury At Euro 2020

Chelsea are eyeing a move to sign Leonardo Spinazzola and reportedly reached out to the Italian with a message of support after his devastating injury at Euro 2020.

Spinazzola, 28, had been one of the shining lights of this summer’s tournament, helping Roberto Mancini’s side reach the semi-finals with a string of outstanding performances from left-back.

But the Roma star pulled up in the 80th minute of Italy’s 2-1 victory over Belgium and broke down in tears as he was stretchered off the field at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena.

It has since been confirmed that Spinazzola ruptured his Achilles tendon, meaning he requires surgery and could be out of action for around six or seven months.

The injury comes as a major blow to both Italy and Spinazzola, a player who has long been tipped as a potential superstar but whose career continues to be ravaged by fitness and injury problems.

Countless kind messages have been sent Spinazzola’s way following his latest setback and newly-appointed Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, said he sympathised with the stricken defender.

We all feel sorry about the loss of Spinazzola for a few months but that is football and we have to be ready to start next week,’ Mourinho told his followers in a short video on Instagram.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the Roma full-back has received a barage of messages and phone calls from team-mates, opposition players and rival teams in the days that have passed, with Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia among those to wish him all the best.

The report claims the Blues are one of the clubs most keen on landing Spinazzola and could step up their interest in the Italy international over the coming weeks.

Ben Chilwell has firmly established himself as Chelsea’s first-choice left-back under Thomas Tuchel but Marcos Alonso could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge and Spinazzola is being viewed as a possible replacement for the Spaniard.

Villarreal’s Alfonso Pedraza and Atalanta’s Robin Gosens have also been linked with moves to west London.

Speaking shortly after Italy’s win over Belgium, Mancini bemoaned the ‘very, very sad’ injury to Spinazzola after such an eye-catching start to the Euros.

‘He didn’t deserve that, he has been one of the best players of this tournament and he will still be even if he can’t play in the next games,’ the Italy head coach said.

‘We are very, very sad with what has happened it seems quite a serious one.’

Italy attacker Lorenzo Insigne added: ‘It’s a great loss, we will try to go all the way for him.

‘He has been such a key player, an influential player for us.’
