Sergio Ramos is spending his last few hours at Real Madrid. PSG are closing in on his signing and have reportedly offered him a one-year contract plus another year optional.
June 30th is finally here, meaning a number of players are about to become free agents. While the most talked-about is Leo Messi, for whom there is yet to be any developments, there are other significant players in a similar position.
Real Madrid announced the departure of Sergio Ramos, who left the club in a very public press conference, a few weeks ago. He will be on the way out of the club, but that won’t be possible until July 1st. Incredibly, the Spanish international will find himself without a club, at least for a few hours.
It seems unlikely that would have happed without the ongoing pandemic. In normal times, it is logical that, in the case of leaving on a free, his new club would have announced his signing already.
The economic difficulties imposed on Europe’s biggest clubs, who have gone from being the most generous to now the most cautious, have put a halt to signing announcements such as Ramos. Only David Alaba, in a similar situation, has been announced with any great fanfare by his new club.
PSG look to be the club closest to signing Sergio Ramos. According to ‘L’Equipe’, the centre-back already has an offer on the table very similar to that which he was hoping to receive from Real Madrid.
A one-year contract, but with the option to extend it one year further depending on a number of clauses. According to the aforementioned source, sporting director Leonardo and manager Maurizio Pochettino are huge admirers of Ramos.
In the case of completing this signing, PSG will once again have an experienced CB in their ranks just one year after Thiago Silva left the club. Kimpembe and Marquinhos haven’t had a bad season, but the arrival of Ramos will be a huge boost for a team that is still chasing the illusive Champions League trophy after they lacked leadership in their semi-final defeat to Manchester City.
